Reign over the Design of WoW. What do you do?

It’s the eternal discussion: “Well, if I were in charge of the game, I‘d make it do this.”

There are elements of WoW we love and elements of WoW that could use some revamping. This week’s Shared Topic, suggested by Naithin of Fun in Games addresses just that. If you could sink your claws into WoW’s design, what would you do?

Pretend for a moment that WoW hasn’t yet been released. Or perhaps it is, but you’ve never heard of the whole SWG NGE debacle, and thus have no fear about dramatically changing how everything works post-release.

You have the original (or BC, or Wrath, or Current, your pick) design docs to start from, but you’re free to change absolutely everything if you so choose.

With all this power, what would you change? What would make WoW the dream game for you?

Netherhood Welcome Wagon – Stormwind Bait Company

Hello Everyone!  Today I’d like you all to join me in welcoming Barklay and Marv from the Stormwind Bait Company.

Barklay and Marv started out their adventures in WoW back when you have to walk uphill both ways to get to the Molten Core entrance (in the snow, no less!) and UBRS was considered raiding.  However, this dazzling duo didn’t pair up until Wrath of the Lich King launched where they were the wonder twins of tanking for their guild (careful with the water/sponge combo gentlemen!).  As they played together and found that they had quite a bit in common, it was easy to see that they would become fast friends not only in the game, but out of it as well.

Somewhere around the time ICC launched they decided that they wanted to push a little more into the raiding scene on a limited time schedule – and they lead their team to down the Lich King just before the summer slumps made the attendance boss an unbeatable foe.  With the release of Cataclysm, the dazzling duo decided that Night Elves were for sissies and Death Knights were so last season and found themselves deciding to level up a set of new characters together.  Barklay, still having a fondness for the druid class, opted for a Worgen Druid, while Marv decided to turn completely from his tanking roots and opted for a shadow priest who enjoys a side of healing.  They both anticipate being back into the raiding scene soon, with a very limited (5-6 hours a week) raiding schedule and a team of focused and dedicated raiders who also have limited time to play.

What Marv and Barklay pride themselves on being able to offer over at the the Stormwind Bait Company is a unique perspective on relating to the casual gamer who likes to have fun and see as much as the game as they can, on a limited play schedule.  Added into that, they also display their fantastic sense of humor in daily quips of fun facts they find on their journeys through Azeroth.

You can find extremely important information, such as Dalaran Dave predicting the weather and how to acquire the most important item in all of WoW! Don’t worry! There are also great articles on Crowd Control Basics and what happens when you don’t ready said articles on crowd control basics. As well as some insights on how the 4.0.6 changes will affect Feral Druids.

Marv and Barklay tell us that we can expect more of their shenanigans and insights on playing WoW on a time budget, along with an occasional rant of the humorous variety. It is also their hope that everyone stay for a direbrew and a chat while stopping buy to pick up their nightcrawlers! I don’t know about you, but I certainly can’t wait to read about Dalaran Dave’s next adventures…and sure do enjoy that direbrew! ;)

Shared Topics: What Causes an Encounter to “Click” and Digging Archeology?

If you’ve ever done a difficult instance or fought a raid boss, you’ve struggled at some point. You’ve wiped and wiped again. You’ve thought to yourself “how can anyone actually beat this?” But, many many tries and a few kills later, you stop and wonder how you ever struggled with the fight. That, friends, is what happens when you learn. But how does that learning process work? Naithin from Fun in Games suggested that, as a Shared Topic, we talk about that boss learning process.

I think that in the vast majority of Cataclysm encounters — raids in particular, but I think the same is true to a degree for heroic encounters too — are getting easier by some factor other than gear. You may disagree on that point, perhaps, but if so why?

Now the obvious answer besides gear is just practice. Practice makes perfect and all that. But why is it that certain encounters start out feeling almost impossible. You seem to be hitting your head against a brick wall, unable to make even a dent in the progression of this encounter. Depending on how long you go through that phase, it may even begin to feel a bit disheartening and then… Then progress is made. It starts to feel possible. You down it.

A little later, even just a week or two later, you can’t imagine ever having difficulty on such an easy encounter. Anyone wiping to this must be a noob!

The second Topic is about our new profession: Archeology. Ringo Flinthammer of Flinthammer Hall pointed out that it was high time that we Share our impressions.

Cataclysm’s new secondary profession, archeology, has gone through a lot of changes since it was first announced — Path of the Titans, we hardly knew you! — but is incredibly popular with players. At least, a lot of them are doing it — there are also a lot of complaints. Still, go to any dig site and you’ll see tons of eager archeologists. What do you think of it? Did Blizzard release it half-baked? Are you happy with its current implementation? What else do you hope to have added to it in future patches?

Resource Site Spotlight – BankAlt.com

This past week on TIPOAA (The Incredible Podcast of Amazing Awesomeness) Mike and Turpster had an email from a listener who said that since “Whats the Mats” closed down (Whats the Mats was a database site for warcraft craftables) he or she had been looking for a site to replace it’s functionality. They gave BankAlt.com a try, and said that it has been updated for Cataclysm, and though the site is in beta, it looks to be a nicely working database focusing specifically on craftables in World of Warcraft.

There isn’t a great deal one could write on a site like this. What it does is streamlines the gargantuan database of World of Warcraft items and quests and the like, and presents to you your search answers limited to the materials needed for crafting items in game.

If you were a fan of “Whats the Mats” than you should certainly enjoy BankAlt.com

It is in beta still, but looks to be functioning properly. I haven’t tested it fully, in truth because I do not have any crafting skills to Cataclysm levels yet.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the screenshot is my bank alt, there are very few graphics on BankAlt.com that would work well as a screenshot for the article :)
