Even if you aren’t a hunter, you may have heard of the famous Elitist Jerks Spreadsheet for hunters. It’s a handy tool for identifying gear upgrades and seeing what combination of stats yields the best dps. It is also a source of occasional controversy, because there are those who swear by nothing but the spreadsheet even in the face of dissenting opinions. Regardless, it is a powerful tool, and one that I use frequently.

The EJ resources, however, are not the only source of such information. Rawr is a program that performs a similar function, and does so for every class in the game.

http://rawr.codeplex.com/

Many gear upgrades are clear. The stats on one item are better, ergo that piece is an upgrade. However, navigating gear decisions becomes trickier when you begin to reach hit or expertise caps, or various soft and hard caps for other stats (Armor Pen. hard cap exists, as do various soft caps for classes on things like crit. and haste). That’s where Rawr comes in handy, doing the math for you. A tour on the front page will walk you through the basics, and it’s not hard to use.

The other thing that Rawr does is show you exactly where your upgrades are in dungeons or raids. Keeping track of every boss and their loot tables on 10M, 25M, hard modes, etc. can be a chore. Rawr can show you exactly what you need, and exactly where it is.

Hardcore numbers junkies may protest such programs or spreadsheets. The formulas aren’t always 100% correct, and the information can occasionally be a little off. However, for the other 99% of us, tools like Rawr can be a godsend, and will do far more good for our endeavors than we could on our own.

On a closing note, this is my last article for Twisted Nether. Real life aggro that prevents me from updating this blog in a timely manner has become a long-term thing. This is a good thing for me, but it means that I have to cut back on my other responsibilities. So my thanks to Fimlys for giving me this gig, my apologies for not being able to fill it longer, my thanks to anyone who has ever read or commented, and a premature congrats to Fim & Co. on their upcoming 100th podcast. Cheers!

Being admin. of a vent channel has its perks. Booting brash PuGs, confusing people by switching their channel arbitrarily, and similarly abusive exercises of power. And, as my guild-mates have recently learned, temporarily banning anyone who sarcastically suggests that I “ride their rocket.” Yes, the X-53 Touring Rocket, one the newest mounts available, has opened the floodgates for levels of innuendo that you won’t find anywhere outside of Barrens chat.

I do not collect mounts. I still ride the pink chicken thing that Silvermoon sold me when I was a baby hunter. But Cataclysm approaches, raid attendance across many servers falters, and people are left circling the drain with boredom (or, more likely, circling Dalaran). Rep grinds, gold farming (not the dirty kind) and mount collecting are all ways players find to pass the time until new content opens up.

http://www.warcraftmounts.com/

Probably the most complimentary thing I can say about Warcraft Mounts is that is doesn’t try to do too much. It has lists of all available mounts, can break them into subsections, and tells you exactly how to obtain them. And that’s really about it. But for a mount farmer, it’s a handy tool, and for the rest of us it can be a fun way to browse potential mounts to look for ones that we may want someday (the only mount I legitimately pine for, for example, is the Phoenix mount from the old BC Sunwell raid).

So good luck to mount collectors, I hope this helps. Now go hop on your Big Love Rocket (shown below), and be sure to make it as awkward as possible for your friends.

WoW Heroes is a useful site that pulls a lot of quirky functionality into one location. It is not a cover-all site, but can be great for comparison purposes.

http://wow-heroes.com/index.php

A quick search will bring up your character, complete with gems, enchants, your raid progression, achievements, etc. If your gems and chants are suboptimal, the site will recommend better ones for you.

One tab over you’ll find the “Compare” tool, which lets you view your character side by side with another. This is great to check out guildies who might need help, compare yourself to well-known or accomplished players in your class, or just for bragging rights.

The guild tab can let you view gear scores for an entire guild (a la GearScore add-ons), and browse the guild for professions. And the Realm tab can be used in much the same way as sites like WoW Progress (featured quite a while ago here in a resource article). It tracks your boss kills and achievements, and ranks guilds within a given realm. I found my own guild’s progress to be missing achievements from the last couple weeks, but it was otherwise up-to-date on my character and guild.

Other features such as a hit calculator and forums are also handy tools. The result is that WoW Heroes is an excellent site to compare yourself and your guild to a host of others, which can be informative or just fun.

World of Raids is a general WoW site that offers many of the same features that you can find on more popular sites like Wowhead and MMO Champion. And certainly, there are similarities to those juggernauts. WoR boasts a robust forum community, Blue Post Tracker and Cataclysm updates, and tutorials and guides. The guides are hit & miss, with some being up-to-date and helpful for any player, while others are woefully out of date and will help you get the most out of your level 70 endgame character.

There are, however, a few aspects of the site that separate them from the aforementioned fare. The videos section is great for compiling numerous guild takedowns of particular bosses. Most of us have our go-to website for boss strategies, but my guild has often found alternative strategies used by other guilds to be useful when our initial strat fails. So instead of trolling through youtube videos looking for something new or helpful, this can be a quicker fix.

The forums, among numerous topics, have an excellent section dedicated to WoW Lore and Lore-based endeavors such as fan fictions and machinima.

These, in addition to the broad functionality and scope of the site, make it a one-stop shop for players looking for a new website to go for their WoW info and discussion.

I was at an unusually large gathering of WoW hunters recently, in real life. And I brought t-shirts, ostensibly to trade with others. So when there was exactly one other person who brought anything to trade, I took to wearing my newfound shirts instead. And I was a bit shocked to realize that no one knew where they where from.

http://www.jinx.com/collections/world_of_warcraft?tcid=1

Jinx is one of the easiest places to get WoW apparel. Hats, keychains, stickers, pins, shirts, pants, sweatshirts, etc. and it’s all officially licensed by Blizzard. Every class, city, and faction is well represented, as are more humorous takes on WoW. And it has far more than the paltry selection in Blizzard’s own store, which is great for buying authenticators or other games but is pathetic for apparel and merchandise.

So if getting wrongly made fun of for “having no life” is not enough, or you’d just like a new shirt to add to your collection (I own hundreds of t-shirts, sadly), here’s an excellent new way to display your geekery.

This huge collection of gun-toting lowbies allows us to run a number of insanely fun low-level events, like this one recently at lvl 19.

But in between events are large swaths of time where there’s not much to do in-game, but we can’t level past a certain point. So what’s a baby hunter to do? Twink ourselves out and wreck instances and BG’s, that’s what. So twinking, and twink gear, has become a prevalent concern.

http://twinkinfo.com/

Despite their superiority to every other class, hunters are not the only class that Twink Info caters to. There’s detailed information for every class in the form of gear lists, strategies, and commentary. The site also boasts an active forum and a convenient “Categories” tab that allows you to filter out information not related to your class or level. And while one might argue that level 80 “twinking” isn’t really true to the idea of twinking, there’s articles and discussion for that level as well.

So if you want to crush your way through PvP or are just interested in some awesome leveling gear, this is a great site to check out.

One of the reasons I’m drawn to particular sites is how well they are able to get down to the bottom line. I.E. if it’s a hunter site, for example, is there easy access to links showing me how to play a hunter well? The problem often comes with most sites’ desire to be both tutorial and news sites. The class/professions/general WoW news buries the “how-to” information, making them a nuisance to navigate.

As such, Skill Capped is one of my new favorite sites, because it doesn’t mince words or purposes. It exists for one reason only: to make you a better PvP player. One of their contributors was recently featured on the Hunting Party Podcast, and it was welcome information to me and my 1400-at-best 2′s arena team.

http://www.skill-capped.com/

There’s good and bad to the site (hopefully more of the former). The good: the site features a slew of contributors from every class that know their class inside and out in PvP. There’s tutorial videos and helpful articles specifically designed toward the aspiring PvP’er. And you will know that everything you see and read there is coming from a legit PvP expert, not John Q. Faceroll.

The bad: there’s a fee. $5 a month, or less per month if you subscribe for longer.

The neutral: If you’re serious about improving as a PvP’er, this is one of the best sites out there, and maybe THE best. Given the amount of time and money any dedicated player spends on WoW, an extra $5 is a drop in the bucket. And for those who are still turned off by any charge, the site is functional every without a subscription. Many of the videos are available to non-subscribers, as are occasional featured utilities. So the casual BG-runner may not be interested in subscribing, but regulars in arena will likely learn a lot from this site. And either one can get something from Skill Capped, making it a worthwhile site for any PvP’er.

While I slog through numerous PvP websites for both this blog as well as my own personal use (My 2′s team hovers around 1400 every season, but can’t seem to get any better. This must change.), this week I’m highlighting a lightweight add-on that is both convenient and aesthetically pleasing.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/chill-effect.aspx

Chill Effect provides small UI tweaks, primarily to your character tab. Perhaps most strikingly, it removes your character picture so that you can view ALL of your character stats on a single page (as shown below on my woefully undergeared priest alt). Now, perhaps you like staring at your beautiful Blood Elf, and this isn’t for you. But for the frankly uglier races like Tauren, Night Elf and Orc, the removal of the pic is a blessing even without the added functionality. I recently sold my soul to Blizzard to the tune of $25 for a race change in order to eek out the most dps possible. Unfortunately this resulted in my new orc hunter looking like a large green wart. I will not miss my character’s picture.

Similar changes make the other tabs more intuitive as well. And there’s other small additions like new Resistances tooltips, which aid in understanding. If an add-on existed (and I will be on constant lookout) that fixed ALL of Blizz’s faulty tooltips, that would truly be revolutionary. Until then, Chill Effect won’t turn any heads, but it may help streamline your UI a bit more.

Phase 3 Sindragosa is proving to be the bane of my raid team at the moment. And even my brilliant-yet-misguided attempts to get us an extra dps’er by pet tanking it (my pet can single tank it, we have to swap 2 tanks otherwise) have failed. And while this week’s highlighted add-on hasn’t helped us down Sindy, it’s been interesting and useful nonetheless.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/timetodie.aspx

Time to Die will track a boss’s health, your raid’s dps rates, and calculate how long it will be before the boss will die. For Sindragosa, it tells me how much longer we need to learn to exist in Phase 3 to beat her. For some dps-intesive fights, it can also tell you if you’re ahead of an enrage timer (25M timers on bosses such as Festergut and Blood Queen are still an issue for some raid teams). Paired with classic raiding add-ons like DBM that show enrage timers, it can help you see the kind of progress your raid has made, or how much it still needs to make.

This is a popular one. I’ve never recommended this to someone without having them tell me they ended up loving it.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/powerauras-classic.aspx

Basically, this lets you customize light-up auras on your screen that respond to pretty much anything in the game. Standing in the fire? Write a power aura to tell you about it. Abilities off cooldown? That too. Manage a rotation, monitor buffs and debuffs, track trinket procs, inform you when your pet/main tank/etc. is low on health. This is just the surface. It’s infinitely customizable, and frankly a lot of fun to use.

Below is a screenshot of my hunter with her “standard” power auras up. I have other ones for unique situations, but this is what I’m generally looking at while raiding (never all at the same time, however). The larger ones monitor large proc-based buffs so that I can stack cooldowns. And the green dots track my rotation shots, so I’m never hitting the wrong button or staring at my cast bar.

The only drawback is that there’s a small learning curve. Once you figure out how to customize them, it’s cake, but it takes a little while to get there. But for its potential usefulness, it’s a small price to pay. Several satisfactory tutorials exist with a simple google or youtube search.

Who among you has been hacked? Probably not a majority of WoW-users. But now let’s add a layer: who knows someone who has been hacked? In a hypothetical room of WoW players, a lot more hands just went up. Next question, how many of you have had money or materials stolen from your guild bank by a hacker? A similarly alarming number of hands would remain up.

Authenticators are cheap and easy to use. And they all but ensure you won’t be hacked. Now, the majority of us would never be hacked anyway, so what’s the worry, right? The worry is, I play WoW a lot, and if you’re online reading WoW blogs chances are you play it a lot too. The risk is too great given the amount of time and money we devote to the game.

Twisted Nether has devoted blog and podcast space devoted to raising awareness and concern about account hacking, and the potential benefit of authenticators. And Blizzard has made them accessible to obtain, even waiving shipping costs to keep the cost low.

I was among those who simply ignored the risks, but have had two guildies in less than a month get hacked, both pillaging the player and our guild bank. Blizzard is usually good about returning lost materials, but you sacrifice time and could be crippling your raid or guild bank for a number of days or weeks, and nobody wants that. I’m a dedicated WoW player and have this TN blog with which to spread this valuable message.

Here’s the link:
http://us.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=1100000822

Mine’s in the mail as I write this. Go get yourself one, and rest easier at night knowing that you aren’t contributing to the filthy hackers who propogate gold buying sites.

Some classes have it easy. Back in BC, a Beastmaster hunter could spam Steady Shot constantly and out-dps many other classes. And while Blizzard has taken care to add some complexity to the spec, it remains the “easiest” hunter spec to play admirably (though, like any spec, difficult to fully master). And a quick glance at any rotation discussion on the internet will reveal a contempt for the “easy” classes.

For the majority of us, however, we’re watching cooldowns a-plenty, and managing complex rotations. Even without lag and complex boss mechanics, it can be difficult (Locks and Enhance Shamans come to mind). This is particularly true for dps classes, but can be said of any class and spec, since tanks and heals often have to ration their spells meticulously as well. And there’s a lot of ways to manage a rotation beyond just staring at your cast bar. Today we’re looking at one of the most popular, EventHorizon.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/eventhorizon.aspx

The picture should describe the function of the addon quite well. It’s a small, handy series of bars that track cooldowns and timers for important abilities. The tracking is highly customizable, and it can give you advanced notice of powerful abilities or cooldowns that are coming up in the near future. The white line represents the present, and the bars track the time until an ability will be ready.

This is by no means the only method of managing a rotation, but if you’re not already doing so and would like to, this might be a good place to start.

This entry was a bit later than planned (RL aggro), but I have many installments already planned for the coming weeks. Among them are some tools for raid leaders, some introductory tips for prospective WoW movie makers, and a look at the often-talked-about Power Auras add-on. So stay tuned!

Hello again after the week off. This week’s article is about a resource that I was clued in to recently by an excellent hunter blogger, Darkbrew, over at http://thebrewhall.com that has helped me immensely.

My hunter was originally a Skinner/Leatherworker. I could support myself. But at a certain point I got anxious about the superior benefits of Jewelcrafting (currently probably the best hunter profession dps-wise), so I dropped skinning.

And now I have two crafting professions with no gathering skills. Expensive, to say the least. But with my Priest alt nearing 80, I decided that I should compliment my Hunter by picking up Skinning and Mining. Now, anyone who has ever played WoW is used to grinding. It’s a necessary evil of the game we love. But it doesn’t mean we have to enjoy grinding, nor that we should do so without help.

Enter WoW Professions:

http://www.wow-professions.com/

I am using it for my gathering professions. It provides maps of areas to farm, suggests a route that you follow through the zone, and tells you when you should move on to the next area. No wasted time. For crafting professions, it tells you what to make and when, and exactly how many mats it will cost you. It pretty much eliminates the frustrating green-colored recipes that may or may not level you up another point.

The site suggests you use the popular add-on Gatherer in conjunction with their guides, though there are other add-ons that can perform the same task admirably. Used together, however, they can save you loads of time and make grinding more tolerable.

Ever stand around in Dalaran listening to the mindless prattle of Trade chat? Or on top of the Orgrimmar bank? Or wherever Allis congregate en masse to trade Chuck Norris jokes and discuss the varying merits of the ORLY owl vs. the STFU Truck? Ever think that maybe you could be doing something more useful during these sequences?

I don’t achievement grind. It’s not related to shooting bosses, so it’s low on my priority list. But we all know someone (or many people) who do. It’s a valid and sometimes entertaining way to spend your time in the game. And in a recent podcast, our dashing Twisted Nether leader Fimlys mentioned an addon that he loves that helps with this endeavor. After trying it out, I can see the appeal, even as someone who isn’t too into achievements. So I wanted to highlight it here for the Overachievers (har!) in the WoW community.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/overachiever.aspx

So if the bored Trade chat watcher I mentioned is you, let Overachiever suggest a nearby or easy-to-complete achievement for you. Other useful features include achievement trackers to show you your progress, as well as in-game tooltips to remind you to do something, such as killing a critter or typing /love for the famous “All the Squirrels…” achievement.

If you like to collect achievements, or just want to make better use of your in-game time, you owe it to yourself to try this out.

If the formatting is sloppy this week, it’s because this is the first post Fimlys isn’t submitting for me. It may take me a while to familiarize myself with the WordPress bells and whistles (edit – thanks to Fimlys for swooping in with the link fixes).

I love Recount. Well, at least when it has the good sense to list my name first under “Damage Done.” But while many of us run some form of stat-tracking addon for dps, heals, damage taken, dispels, etc. there are websites that do it even better. The point of them, beyond simply comparing online “dps sizes” *cough* is to have some information that we can then learn from to improve our performance.

Several sites feature this in an in-depth format. Today, sticking with veiled references for the male member, we’re looking at World of Logs.
http://www.worldoflogs.com/

This site will give you more information than you’re ever likely to need, but is heaven for stat lovers.

A quick download of their application will allow you to record every boss fight in a given night, which can then be uploaded to the website for perusal and analysis. To give an example, here’s the damage done from my guild’s first ever downing of Lana’thel about a month and a half ago:

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/m3notg8t3e6k1d3t/analyze/dd/source/?s=5008&e=5314

And while it pains me to post a fight where I’m not first, the other hunter and I have both led that fight depending on who is bitten first. Still, I think the lesson learned from this is that hunters are awesome.

Two other uses for this site that I’ve found very beneficial:

1.Identifying WHAT is damaging you is often just as useful as knowing your damage done. Let’s look at another Blood Queen attempt from that night:

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/m3notg8t3e6k1d3t/analyze/dt/target/?s=4371&e=4695
Scroll over the names and you’ll see what the damage is from. Nearly all the damage done is shadow, which would tell us that we need as much shadow resistance as is possible. But while this particular fight is rather easy to identify in terms of damage type, there are plenty of fights with multiple types of damage, or spells that do a mixture of damage types (nature + shadow, for instance). Identifying what is killing you on wipes, then planning accordingly with your group, can be one of the most helpful things you do.

2. Let’s say you get as much information as you need from Recount, and don’t feel like uploading everything to a website. WoL can still be useful, or at least fun, because it can show you what classes are doing the best on which fights, and also what the max potential is for the class you play. Looking at the best numbers from Blood Queen (10M) on any server or class:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/rankings/players/Icecrown_Citadel/Blood-Queen_Lana%27thel/10N/dps/

…we can see that Mages are absolutely crushing it on her.

Or we could see what I could be doing in my MM spec if I were uber-l33t:

http://www.worldoflogs.com/rankings/players/Icecrown_Citadel/Blood-Queen_Lana%27thel/10N/Marksmanship_Hunter/

Holy damnit, MM can push 20K. Time to go cry in a corner with some Orcish Brandy. To be fair, my earlier parse was from Feb. 1 and was several upgrades ago, and my best recent result are much better, but I’m still a long way off.

Or say you’re a dps DK with a decision to make about your spec, and your guild is stuck on this boss. Comparing the 3 specs might give us some insight into which you should bring into it:

Blood Spec

Frost Spec

Unholy Spec

Blood, it seems, has the highest potential, but there’s also a quicker drop-off in the totals than there is in Unholy. Frost can be tentatively eliminated, and the decision between the other two can probably be determined by which you feel more comfortable with. Not being a DK, there’s likely other factors that I’m not aware of, but this is to illustrate what kinds of conclusions you might be able to draw from such information.

In all there’s a lot to do on this site, more than I have time to cover. But if it seems at all interesting to you, browse around and record some of your own raids. Chances are you’ll learn something about yourself or your group.

(Editorial Comment: Please make sure to virus check your computer after this or any downloads onto your computer. There is no information at publication date that this site or its applications are harmful in any way, but caution should always be exercised.)

MMO Champion is a huge site with a lot of WoW-related resources, but we’re looking at a very specific one today, the Raid Composition tool. Using this can help you understand your raid group’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as possibly make changes to improve it.

http://raidcomp.mmo-champion.com/

The mechanics are simple: drag a class/spec into the raid groups, and the chart on the right will tell you exactly which buffs you do and don’t have. Green checkmarks represent “assured” buffs (Ret pallies with replenishment, for example) while a yellow squiggly line indicates that a buff could be present, but won’t always be. Kings, Might, BoW are all yellow for the same ret pally, since he can only provide one. Another often-overlooked aspect of raid composition is at the bottom right, which tells you how many potential disease, magic, curse, and poison removers are in the group, as well as a few other useful bits of info.

This can also be a valuable tool for potential or current raid leaders, since a good raid leader knows what buffs each class can or should provide, and can use that knowledge to maximize the group’s potential (or to identify lazy players who forget to buff). As a l33t hunter, for example, I don’t speak the language of Faceroll, so I need to research the abilities of the lesser classes (i.e. everyone else).

To see this in action, let’s take a look at my guild’s regular 10M, which looks something like this:

http://raidcomp.mmo-champion.com/?c=e5ohf98kj1000000000000000000000000000000

…and is lacking comprehensive caster buffs. As such, the physical dps in our group really shines. This usually isn’t a problem, but we do have casters that sub in every now and then, and their dps suffers because of this. 25M raids should never have such problems, but maximizing a 10M can be hard if certain buffs are not present. And this can help you identify those inadequacies, or just play around with groups to see how buffed they are. I have yet to find a 10M that can cover every single buff, even counting drums/scrolls for things like Kings, Gift, Fort, etc. Extra points if anyone else can.

Installments weekly. Stay tuned. And leave comments! My self-esteem is a fragile, fragile thing. I need online validation every time I lose to a rogue on a damage meter (and about a dozen shots when I lose to a DK).

Hi all, my name’s Arthemystia (Arth for short). Euripedes apparently overshot his blogging limits and sent out a call for someone to take over the Utilities blog here at TN. And unfortunately enough for all involved, I answered the call. I got my blogging start (and continue to contribute) over at the Warcraft Hunter’s Union, writing occasional pieces about hunter pet tanking. Yes, pet tanking. But while I’ll no doubt try to gratuitously drop links to my massively obscure niche of the hunter world in the future, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here for a trial run at this TN blog, while Fimlys decides if he can abide two straight facerolling huntards in charge of it. But I love collecting information about WoW and talking about it, as well as hearing the ideas and input of others, so hopefully it’s a natural fit.

I’m going to start my stint here with an add-on that has had a profound impact on my recent gaming. Our game lags for one of two primary reasons. One is graphics: our system can’t handle the load, be it in a populated city, 25M raid, or massive AoE zerg (I’m looking at you, Phase 2 Onyxia). There’s no easy fix for this, provided your in-game graphics settings are suitably low. You’re computer just needs an upgrade, be it RAM, processing speed, graphics card, etc. The second reason for lag is latency, which is either a slow response time from your computer, the server, or both. And this we CAN fix, unless of course you’re just using lag as an excuse:

Enter latency fixing add-ons, the most popular of which is Leatrix:

http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info13581-LeatrixLatencyFix.html

Basically many computers are like your guild’s DK: functioning well enough to play, but still doing their job wrong. The site itself puts the process sufficiently into layman’s terms, with an amusing dialogue in which your PC is played by what I can only assume is a loyal but stupid clone of the golden retriever from the movie Up. But in a nutshell, it changes the way your PC sends and receives information so that it is more conducive to gaming. This is not a WoW-exclusive addon, affects your entire computer, and does not need to go in your WoW addon folder.

That isn’t to say it changes other aspects of your computing; I have yet to notice any difference with my regular internet connection, but have seen huge strides in WoW. What once used to be an excellent latency rate for me (100-ish, spiking to well into the thousands if I was unlucky) is now just a myth. I have yet to see my latency above 100 in the couple months I’ve had it installed, it’s routinely between 20 and 50, and the infamous "lag spike" is a thing of the past.

So if your latency is regularly colored red, do yourself a favor and try this out. The worst I’ve heard from friends and guildies who use it is that they see no change in gameplay. But for some, myself included, it’s been a godsend.

Be sure to keep tuning in, either to continue standing in awe of my writing prowess, or to cry as someone less hunter-ish takes over full-time.

(Editorial Comment: Please make sure, since this is not a WoW addon, to virus check and only download this application from a well respected source. Keep up with news about this addon in case of any breach, etc. Non-WoW Addons can and have been a source of Viral attack. This said, there has been no information [at publication date] that this addon is harmful in any way)

Hi folks! Today we’re going to explore a wonderful site that aims to be the first stop for any player who wants to learn how to play their class in a raid: Raider 101.

As you can see from the screenshot of their home page, this is not a pretty site, it’s a functional site. Interestingly, it’s also a wiki style site- many of the contributions are from regular folks who have something to add. I checked through the hunter guides, and if I had had access to a site like this when I first started, I could have avoided hours of research and googling about trying to learn what precisely I should be doing.

So hop on over and take a look around! If you are interested in learning how to raid, changing raiding classes, or just want to get a better idea of what all your team-mates are doing while you do your thing, this is a good comprehensive resource.

The resource site spotlight (aka wiki tiki utility posts) should happen every week, but is written by Euripides from outdps.com and the Hunting Party Podcast, and endeavors to fill your favorites bar with an unmanageably large quantity of WOW resource sites.

Hi folks! Today, I’m going to spotlight an addon recently profiled by the always effervescent Nibuca, of Mystic Chicanery.

Elitist Group is an unfortunately named addon that gives you information about the members of your group. Specifically, it gives you a short summary of various character metrics, as well as lets you write yourself notes about people.

Here is an image (originally from Nibs’ site) showing a summary people in a group:

Note that there’s an easy to understand check or X beside various entries for each character. You can earn an X by doing things like mis-enchanting your gear or rocking your resilience set in a heroic.

While I am not a huge fan of automated character judgment, I find that there is some value in knowing what you are working with before you start. It may change your play-style.

That said, the fact that a group of 80s in holiday garb and pvp weapons would probably be able to (eventually) finish a heroic makes this addon’s automated assessments of slightly less value, however the ability to write yourself notes and rate your group-mates (without using up a precious friend slot) is the real killer feature:

This would automate something I think a lot of people do already- keeping a list of people so terrible (attitude, skill, whatever) you aren’t interested in playing with them, but not so terrible that you’re willing to add them to your ignore list. It would also add something I think we should all do- keep a list of awesome people.

The resource site spotlight (aka wiki tiki utility posts) should happen every week, but is written by Euripides from outdps.com and the Hunting Party Podcast, and endeavors to fill your favorites bar with an unmanageably large quantity of WOW resource sites.

Note: This is a repost of a column written by the OutDPS addon guru, Faeghleis.

Boss Tactics is an a phenomenal tool to make your raid run more smoothly. What it does is allows synchronized graphical walk through of boss encounters. “Huh” I hear you ask? Boss Tactics let’s you and everyone in your raid to see the same thing at the same time for the strategy for the encounter. The addon is laid out in a very clear and concise manner: instance selection and bosses are at the top followed by custom text options and details about trash. Looking down to the left is where the heart if the addon lies, in a screenshot section where movable pins are located. The raid leader (or raid assistants) have control of these pins. But that’s just the beginning, not only is every pin move broadcasted to the raid keeping everyone in sync, you can also ping and draw on this screenshot section. If you need to illustrate a complex maneuver it’s extremely simple and intuitive to do.

Continuing down from the tactics space is the raid management tools. These are both for integral functions of the addon itself, as well as more generic raid functions such as automatic promotion of raid assistants. Other buttons in this section are for starting and synchronizing the boss tactics sessions and the tactics mode- more on this later.

The right hand half of the addon is dominated by the text description of the encounter, again the text is customizable. If the text has changed on the raid leaders version, the addon will send the appropriate changes to the raid.

For raid assistants there is also a raid leader’s chat channel built into the addon on the right hand side. The addon also automatically generates chat channels for your heals, dps and tanks, although these are accessed via slash commands.

There is also has a special “Tactics Mode” to allow raid leaders to prepare and modify the default strategies that come as standard without having to be in a raid to prepare. All in all Boss Tactics is a great little tool to help you wipe less.

Below are two walk though videos that the BossTactics author Sorontur made for raid leaders.

Hi folks, today I’m highlighting a really useful tool that lets you know how competitive the guild or realm is you’re considering switching to. Wow Progress is a site that keeps track of all the raiding guilds is knows about (and it knows about most of them), and rated them based on how quickly they get through content. Here’s an example of a guild page:

Note how they have the ranking for all the achievements on the bottom.

It also compiles this info by realm so it can tell you which realms are most active in PvE:

This can be a really useful tool if you’re interested in finding a new guild, choosing your first realm for a character you plan on raiding with, or just generally keeping up with the Joneses.

The resource site spotlight (aka wiki tiki utility posts) should happen every week, but is written by Euripides from outdps.com, and endeavors to fill your favorites bar with an unmanageably large quantity of WOW resource sites.

This week, I’ll be highlighting an addon that helps you run a GDKP raid called GoldRaidManager. In case you’re wondering, GDKP is a style of raid loot distribution popularized by people on Korean MMO servers. Essentially, the way it works is that all drops are auctioned off to the highest bidder, and all the money gained this way gets split among all raid members at the end of the instance. Here’s the thread about it on EJ.

The manual for this addon is a “convenient” mile long JPG with screenshots. Basically, this addon is used every time an epic or something of value drops. People in raid bid gold for drops by typing a number into raid chat. Note- during an auction would be a bad time to link the DPS meters. The winner trades their bid amount to the raid leader, who will divide the gold into 25 equal shares at the end of the raid:

Now GDKP itself is not for everyone, but if your server has enough players who are geared to the teeth and farming ToC while working on ToGC, some of them might well be interested in going back into Naxx or Ulduar again if they could get 2700G from it.

One FAQ I needed answered before I would even consider posting this is about ninjas with master loot- however, this blue post assuaged my fears. Basically, as long as the rules are stated in game chat (not vent), the GMs will consider any loot ninja a scammer, and make sure everyone gets their share.

Today, I’ll be highlighting a forum for warcraft economics. The JMTC forums are hosted by Marco, from the Just My Two Copper blog, and is a place for people to talk about making money on the WOW auction house. It’s one of the larger such communities, and as such has a wealth of information to get people started on using the auction house to make gold.

Please note- some of the ads on the site are for services that break the game’s terms of service, and I have to say that the TNB does not suggest you do anything that would break the game rules, but the info in the forums themselves are all fair game.

They have quite a few guides for different professions, so if you’re trying to figure out how to make money with, say, leatherworking and enchanting, go take a look!

Epicadvice.com is a place to ask and answer questions. Picture the official forums, only community moderated and without blue posts. Or picture stackoverflow.com only about warcraft.

It was just launched, and they’re always working on tweaks and features, however it is already a very useful tool. If you have an openID, you can just use that to log on (yay, no more passwords!), and can get started right away. As a new user, you’ll have no reputation and not be able to do some basic things, however you will be able to ask and answer questions.

As you use the site more, assuming you’re not a mouth-breathing, key-turning, gold selling troll/spammer, you’ll start to gain reputation as people vote your answers and questions up. This gives you access to other features like adding tags and down voting. Nothing paramount to the basic usefulness of the site, but the kind of thing that you need to hang around a bit to earn.

You can also earn “badges” which are like achievements in warcraft. Fill in your profile, get a badge. Ask a question, get a badge. Etc. These are more cosmetic, in my opinion

Anyways, I’m just getting started in there and it’s all fairly new to me. Go ahead, give it a shot. Assuming this place continues to work the way it does now, the quality of the answers you get will be higher than many other Q&A places on the web.

Today’s resource site spotlight will be going over a site that does a lot of work for raiders. Gear Wishlist is deceptively simple web app that tells you what you want. Seriously! Just give it your character and realm, and it will pull your gear and spec from the armory, and put together a list of upgrades based on the wowhead preset stat weights.

Here’s me: http://gear-wishlist.appspot.com/wishlist?character=euripides&realm=drenden&region=us

Now since the survival hunter presets on wowhead are actually based on calculations done on my character, this is a very good tool for me. However, for everyone else, bear in mind that your situation is not always going to be typical. When in doubt, double check with your existing tools. Still, aside from minor variants where the difference between you and the wowhead presets is enough to reorder your list a bit, this is a very nice quick wish list!

Today’s resource site spotlight will be going over the theory-crafting den that we all love, elitistjerks.com.

It is a few things, but publicly, and most importantly, it is a forum for theorycrafters to share and develop information about how the game works. This site is the de-facto standard for information, however it’s not for the faint of heart. The site is moderated by a group of players who have a very strict set of rules designed to prevent the place from looking too much like the official forums and keep the signal to noise ratio very high.

Every time you break a rule, someone will report your post to the mods, and they will give you an “infraction”, which prevents you from posting. If you get enough of these infraction points, you will be permanently banned.

To participate, click on the forums link on the top of the page. Find the forum that concerns you, and then get ready to read. Each forum has a wealth of information stored in threads on various topics. New accounts are not allowed to create threads until they have 10 posts that did not earn infractions (and posting something trivial to increase your post count will get you an infraction).

Generally, the first post in a thread is where all the info you need is, however if it is out of date (god knows mine need a bit of update love), you will have to piece together the information you need by reading through the thread. These are often 50+ pages. If you read the last few pages, you’ll have a pretty good idea about how things work, however if the mechanic you want to learn about is not discussed there, work backwards to ensure that you get the most recent information first.

Do not, under any circumstances, post asking a question that has been answered. Even if the answer was 3 months and 20 pages ago, you’re expected to know already. Unfortunately, their search bar is not very intelligent and limits you from searching for short terms, however you can always search a forum by going to google and searching something like “hit cap site:http://elitistjerks.com/f74/” which will give you fairly good search results for the hunter hit cap.

Do not, under any circumstances, start a post by saying “first time poster”, because even if you proceed to write the best post in the history of the site, you will get an infraction.

Once you’re comfortable with the site rules and maybe you’ve taken a look at their list of comments that got infractions to see the type of thing they don’t want, you can start participating.

They value original research more than speculation, and because of this, many of the bits of knowledge floating around the internet that we take for granted were tested on elitist jerks first. Just don’t poke the bear.

The resource site spotlight (aka wiki tiki utility posts) should happen every week, but is written by Euripides from outdps.com, and endeavors to fill your favorites bar with an unmanageably large quantity of WOW resource sites.
Oh my goodness, this is cool! Some frood named Fitzcairn coded an awesome site called macroexplain.com that allows you to paste a macro into it, and then it explains what it does, line by line! Here’s an example of the site at it’s finest: a link to its explanation of a hunter misdirect macro I use. I can add a title, a class, tags, comments, and attribute it to an author if I want.

The tool is dead easy to use. One warning- it doesn’t speak LUA (the wow scripting language) so if you tell it to explain a complex script you use to, say, mail all your greens to another character, it’s explanation will run something along the lines of “Run LUA” and then the code after the “/run” command. Still, for those complex non-LUA macros, this is a godsend. No more trying to parse the code in your head and remember how conditionals work (wait, will holding shift while pressing this macro shoot or feign death?).

On behalf of the internet, thank you Fitzcairn. Thank you.

Hi again! Today we’re going to talk about a very popular site that used to be known as Talent Chic. They have since moved their site to wowpopular.com and cover more than talents now. Basically, this site allows you to be a better sheep. Some people don’t want to have to trawl through 150 pages of guile and stupid questions on popular theorycrafting forums just to find the new “best” talent build, and figure that they will do just fine going with whatever’s popular. There’s a certain logic to this- any really popular spec must be popular for a reason, right?

The site is very easy to use- the left bar allows you to drill down to the info you want, and the right area displays the builds, enchants, gear, or gems. This info is listed by popularity, and for builds, you can even see a short description of the differences between each of them! If you want to see the whole build, just click on the wowhead or wowarmory icon which will link you to the complete spec. When I ran hunters, I was surprised to see how few marksmanship specs there were- less even than BM! For the last few months, the spec of choice has been marks. The popularity data might be because of a recent survival buff, or proof that hunters are stubborn and obstinate players who will run with they spec they like to play, regardless of whether it’s the most DPS they can get.

This segues quite nicely into my one warning about this resource- it’s awesomely accurate, but be aware that just because something’s popular doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. If you’re looking for a spec to get started with that will allow you to develop your own experience and make your own decisions, this can help.

If, however, you’re a raider or arena player who is doing well already, don’t assume that if you’re doing something differently than most players, they’re right and you’re wrong.

Hi folks! Today I’ll be profiling Bosskillers.com (link, wiki entry). This is a very good site to have open while you raid. It has a large database of boss guides, covering virtually every boss in all the available content. Simply select the dungeon you’re crawling from the left dropdown menu, and then select the boss you’re trying to figure out. They’ll have the basics about the bosses abilities, as well as more advanced strategy that can help you get your group’s first kill.

If you’re the payin’ sort, you can get animated guides, and if you’re the writin’ sort, you can try your hand at writing a guide. Take a look at this new Coliseum boss- no guides yet. I remember when Wrath and Ulduar were first released, Bosskillers had a promotion where they would pay something like 100$ for a good guide on a new boss.

Till next time!

Hi again folks! Today I’m going to spotlight a very useful utility site called Kaliban’s Class Loot Lists (wiki link). Some guilds, whether they have a DKP system or not, want to ensure that loot goes to players who will use it for their primary spec before it goes to people who would only use it for an offset. In theory, the guild will get better use of gear if it’s played more. While this is a fairly inexact science (especially now that dual spec is available), a large amount of time can be spent arguing about whether a piece of gear is “meant” for one class or spec or another.

Kaliban’s class loot lists has categorized all the drops in the current end game by which class can use it most. I don’t always agree (note my improvements in the screenshot), but it can be handy to have a list broken down already before you embark on a raid.

In theory, any loot distribution system that needs an absolute reference for which classes should be allowed to roll on something can use this to avoid having long, boisterous, frank exchanges of opinions about whether it’s a rogue piece without expertise, or a leather hunter piece.

To use, simply select the raid you’re doing from the first page, scroll down to the boss you get the loot from, and check what classes are considered first, second, and third priority for it.

Tune in next time, and please contact me if you have anything you’d like to see here!
