How do you think your class is viewed/treated by NPCs?

This stemmed from a pondering about how my rogue might be viewed/treated by NPCs – after all, if someone calls you “roguish” it really usually isn’t a comment. Would a warlock be treated with a sneer? A priest/paladin with extra respect?

Might this depend on the NPC (a guard, a vendor, flight master, quest giver) and the circumstances?

Participating were:

Strumwulf from Strumwulf’s Page of Stories and Ideas

Aaaaand for this week’s Shared Topic, we talk about working together, as a team, in a raid setting. What can different roles do to assist each other? How can dps players help their healers (beyond the obvious not standing in fires)? How can various dps classes help each other perform? Blog about it and share the link in the thread at Blog Azeroth!

A quick peak at other upcoming topics:
What would you change in the UI with Cataclysm?
What mementos have you kept and why?

We’re running really low on Shared Topics, so if there’s a topic you’d love to see discussed across the blogosphere, suggest it over at Blog Azeroth. We love new Topics!

Mount rewarding meta achievements are here to stay, But what if achievements Look like if they were around from classic forward? So i figured, make some metas for older raids or instance clusters, Name and design some achivements puns and all and design a reward fit for them (no flying mounts in MC etc) This seems like, for one Pun GOLD also a nice way of being nostalgic without open “IN MY DAY!” talk.

Proposing interesting achievements were:

This week’s Shared Topic is an opportunity to pull out your RP skills, or not if RPs not your thing there’s still plenty to say, as you describe how NPCs view your character’s class. Have fun getting creative and exploring the relationships characters have with various NPCs. And when you’re done, post a link to your work in the thread at Blog Azeroth so we can all read it.

The first topic, from two weeks ago, was suggested by Nenunial of The Rambling Draenei Death Knight. Giving us an opportunity to show off our drawing (or at least our screenshotting) skills, she proposed posting a screenshot or fanart and talking a bit about it.

You know the saying, a picture tells a thousand words? It’s true! But, for us WoW players, that also extends to screenshots and fanart.

So, include a screenshot, some fanart, or even some art that you create yourself, and tell what it reminds you of. Does it make you smile? Remember a hilarious circumstance in a heroic with some guildies? Or even mutter to yourself, “They really should nerf ___insert class here___”?

Be inspired by screenshots and WoW artwork, and blog about it!

Participating were:

As for this week’s Shared Topic, we’re coming up with Achievement ideas. But not just any achievements- classic WoW achievement.
Obviously, whether or not to advertise the skills we’ve learned from an online video game depends on the job in question. But even when they don’t directly apply to your professional life, lessons from WoW still come in handy from time to time. Sindei, from 6 Inch Heals, suggested that, as last week’s Shared Topic, we mention some of the thing we’ve learned from World of Warcraft.

What has the World of Warcraft taught you? Did you learn about economics from playing the Auction House? Or learned the value of household chores from doing dailies? Or maybe WoW has impacted your real life in some other way. Maybe you even met your significant other in Azeroth! Write about something you’ve learned from WoW, or some other way it’s affected you in the real world.

It’s the (relatively) age old question that Ecclesiasticaldisc from Ecclesiastical Discipline brought up for last week’s Shared Topic: is it ever ok for a healer to let someone die?

[...] wondering how other healers feel. Where do you draw the line on shifting the priority of someone’s heals down (or refusing to heal them all together)? Is it if they upset you personally? If they are consistently standing in the fire? If they have lame dps? If they aren’t managing their aggro? If they go afk for fifteen minutes in the middle of a boss fight? Is it only when it’s jeopardizing the entire group’s success? I believe there is a point for every healer, but where does the gray area fall? Does anyone really heal the jerk who is offensive and stands in fire when there is anyone else who needs healing?

While I’m curious about healer opinions, I also think this is an interesting question for tanks and dps. When do you think it’s fair if a healer lets you die? Do you trust your healers or do you worry they will let personal feelings or pet peeves guide their choices? Do you feel like a healer stating (in advance of a pull) that they will not heal until an issue hindering the group is resolved is fair? As a tank, do you feel you need or appreciate the support of a healer to handle dps who aren’t doing their job? Do you feel aggravated when someone even suggests that a behavior could be bad enough to result in said person not getting healed?

I know this can be a loaded issue, and I am very open to opposing viewpoints. If you want to argue that you should heal everyone equally based on their hp and incoming damage, regardless of any other considerations, I’d love to hear your reasoning.

The context I’m imagining is a random PUG five man normal or heroic at any level, but feel free to answer in any way that moves you.

Alternate Questions: Who *really* has the control over the pace and progress in a five man PUG? How do you – in your own role – fix a group dynamic that is obviously failing and causing people to die? Do you feel like you are more likely to listen to the direction of a tank or a healer in a PUG five man?

With the football world cup approaching quickly, nations around the globe get hyped up in a frenzy, waving flags, painting their faces in national colours and generally acting crazy.

In contrast to that, the rather serene atmosphere of Azeroth, where everybody is waiting for something big to happen, something Cataclysmic. Now imagine: What if, instead of laying waste to two continents, Deathwing actually came up and said “Let’s determine which race of Azeroth is best once and for all – by having the World Cup of Warcraft!”

Faction rivalries are set aside, each race is on it’s own, supporters are flooding to the capitals and embarking in ships to see their teams play.

Which race would win the Cup, and how?
Which crowd favourite dark horse would face them in the finals?
Which seemingly unbeatable team gets sent home after a devastating and surprising defeat in the first round?

Note: For fluff reasons you may include Worgen, Goblins, Murlocs, Dark Irons, Gnolls and whatever else seems to make up a large enough demographic while being reasonably intelligent.

This upcoming week’s topic is about PvP and leaders in the battlegrounds. In every battleground, one person is appointed leader. Should that person have the responsibility to lead the group? What if the leader is inexperienced with pvp and battlegrounds? Should someone take over? Let the discussions begin! (I used this week’s links as an example.) Shared Topics are shared, so spread the love to your fellow participating bloggers!

And if you’re reading this and saying “I have a blog but I’ve never done a Shared Topic…”, then you should do a Shared Topic! This week we’re staying in the Cataclysmish department as we discuss what needs to die in a fire in the expansion. Join in by posting about it and reporting back to the thread on Blog Azeroth. If you don’t have a blog but would still like to say a few things about it, feel free to answer in a comment to this post, to next week’s Shared Topic roundup or to the post of your favorite participating bloggers.

So I’ve been a bit fail these days with the Shared Topics write ups. While moving and backpacking doesn’t affect my ability to keep on top of Blog Azeroth stuff, apparently working full time does. I promise I’ll do better next time. Now on with the Shared Topics of the past two weeks!

* * *

The last few months of Wrath are upon us. Raids are winding down, players are taking breaks from the game, we’re all impatiently awaiting Cataclysm. Some of us are getting ready for it, some us of…not so much. How about you, asks Nexdominus from There Will be Blood, what are you doing to prepare for Cataclysm?

What are you doing if anything to get ready for cataclysm?

As for our latest Topic, Ardol from WoW Philosophized wants us to get up close and personal (sorta) by Sharing our favorites. Favorite what? It doesn’t matter. Just our favorites.

The idea of this shared topic is to write a post about your favorite something(s). Maybe it could be your favorite movies, favorite books, or if you wish to write about WoW, your favorite quests, favorite abilities, etc. I won’t limit this to being in just list form; if you wish to expound on one particular tv show or dungeon, go right ahead. The true purpose of this kind of topic would be to help your readers get to know you as a person, but to focus on one particular aspect of who you are and what you like, and to see who agrees or disagrees with you.

This upcoming week’s Shared Topic is another Cataclysm-related topic. Sort of. With slowing down of the game, the same-old-same-old-I-can’t-wait-until-the-expansion, many of us are getting to be in a bit of a slump. Many, but not all! What are you doing to keep the pre-expansion blues from getting you down? Be sure to blog about it and post the link in the thread at Blog Azeroth!

I’ve posted about it here if you’d like a little more detail, but basically, the idea is to take your character out into Azeroth and Outlands, pick a few zones to visit, take a few screenshots maybe, tell us how your character reacts to their surroundings, explore the little bits of lore. It’s really quite open to your own interpretation, but it is an invitation to get out there and write about what you see.

After a long day of adventuring, where’s your favorite town to hang up your weapon, take off your boots or slippers and curl up with a glass of wine? (Or a skin of whatever swill you undead people drink.. how does that work anyway? I wouldn’t think you’d need food and water, but I see you nomming as much as the rest of us.)

What town makes you want to turn your charger around and race for the next outpost? Where you know the bedbugs WILL bite, and the slop on your plate will likely leave you with indigestion?

Be as flexible as you like! Capital cities, towns or outposts–even that little wayside moonwell in on the edge of Ferelas is fair game!

Sometimes, after you’ve scrambled to get all your work done for the night, after you’ve grabbed your drinks and your snacks, you excitedly log into the game only to find out that there just aren’t enough people available/the server is throwing a hissy fit/aliens have temporarily taken over your guild. Disappointed but not discouraged, you turn to your backup plan for the night. If you have one.

To make sure that, from now on, everyone will always have a backup plan to turn to when their raid is canceled, Deyndor from Swift Retribution suggested last week, that as a Shared Topic, we blog about what we do when our raid is canceled.

So I was talking with Eda on twitter tonight and she mentioned that she’s had 4 raids in the last 2 weeks get canceled. And that got me wondering, what do people do when their raid is canceled?

I’m sure there will be the mundane like farming stuff or running heroics, but I’m sure there are a lot of people with some really interesting and fun things too. Maybe you invade an enemy capital by yourself. Maybe you go play an alt. Whatever it is, share it!

For last week’s Shared Topic, Guthammer from Guthammer’s Last Stand invited us to comment on that level bracket, on what we like about it, on what we like less and on what we’d suggest to improve it.

A while ago Blizzard came out with the stat that 70% of its accounts don’t ever make it past level 10. While I am sure that Blizzard can put in some great analysis of their game, I am also sure that they would love to hear more player feedback on the new level experience.

Now I realize that most of us are far from newbies and we won’t be able to get into a newbies mind set perfectly (heck I am 10 years out of newbiehood for MMOs and 5 years out for WoW), but I think we can all add to the dialog about those first 10 levels, what works for you and what doesn’t.

Now, on with the show!

No matter how much most of us claim to “blog for ourselves”, we almost all get a bit of a rush every time a post of ours receives a new comment. Anea from Oh look, an alt! wondered if the satisfaction that comes from receiving comments (or the fear of receiving negative comments) hinders our ability to express ourselves to our full intent and proposed, as a Shared Topic, would no comments make us better bloggers?

One of the things that can make us happiest as bloggers is seeing e-mails notifying us of comments on our blogs. However, if we took that away – and the influence it may have over our writing – would we become better bloggers?

Would writing what it really is you want to write make you truer to the purpose that you started the blog for? To write exactly whatever is in your head, rather than worrying about whether or not anyone will find it “interesting” or “good enough” to comment on? For the joy of writing?

Or are comments integral to your blogging experience and if you don’t have them, you don’t write?

This week’s Shared Topic addresses an issue omnipresent in the game: the relationship between gold selling, gold buying and account hacking. After seeing two of her guildmates getting hacked, Tarinae of A Healadin’s Tear suggested we write about the topic of gold buying and where this gold comes from:

Blizzard has been on the fast track to promoting account security lately. They all new options for when accounts are compromised, they offered pets for authenticators, they made several posted awareness sheets, etc.

But running parallel to that is the amount of gold sellers we see.

I have seen two of my guildmates hacked already this year by devastatingly experienced hackers. I was going to construct a post about the ugly truth behind gold buying. Do I know anyone who buys gold? No, but I know people who suffer the consequences. I did it once.

I want to try to make sure people are aware of what happens when a gold seller needs to fill an order…they don’t create this stuff out of thin air.

So I thought I would promote it as a shared topic so you can share any (hacking or other) experiences you have to help raise awareness. People expect blizzard to say this stuff…but we are just players….real players with real experiences.

Say you got sucked into a time warp. Or your account vanished. Or you moved to a different server zone. Or you just wanted a fresh start. How would you go about starting all over? What would you do differently?

Pieces from Blasting Away come up with the idea of (hypothetically) starting over for last week’s Shared Topic:

If you had the chance to start all over again in WoW, but your char is already level 80, or level 1 depending on if you like to level or not :>. What class would you pick? What race? What faction?
Why would you pick that class/race/faction?

And most of all what would you plan to do with it? Raid, PvP or just hang out in Dalaran?

It just fascinates me what people would do if they would be given the option to start all over again on the highest level, would you pick the same class you play now or would you make your secret wish of playing (say) a mage come true?

Once again (yay!), a lot of bloggers spoke up on the topic:

While fumbling around Azeroth, we’ve all experienced that “ooooooo” moment of awe at some point or another. Maybe it was when someone “got their (decked in epics) main” to get your group through Deadmines as you were leveling your first character. Maybe it was finally reaching Crossroads, only to see the place get destroyed by a single level ??? character. Or maybe it was entering Ulduar for the first time, immersing yourself in the titanic vastness of the ancient prison.

Elsen from View From the Branches shared a personal moment of awe as she suggested last week’s Shared Topic:

A suggestion from me here…

In a random conversation with a good friend of mine, whilst he bubbled his way off Thunderbluff after collecting the elders achievement, was how we first felt that very first time we encountered the ?? of a high level of the opposite faction.

It became very much like, “i remember my first time that…” and one of the things I remember was how in awe I was off this big tauren who came and stomped his/her way through Astranaar, killed all the NPCs and in my tiny, level 20 druid mind I thought – I CAN HELP!!! I cast a rejuv on a guard, and he /laugh ed at me, and one shotted me.

I was bewildered, confused and totally in awe.

There were many times during my first year on WoW I was awed by something or other – even when I walked into Naxx as a level 80 for the first time, I felt awed.

I’d be curious to see if we can get bloggers writing about what gave them that sense of wonderment when they started playing WoW, started PvPing, started raiding…whatever it was that made you gasp!

Quite a number of bloggers were inspired by this, writing and photographing their own World of Awecraft moments. Reporting back to Blog Azeroth were:

Especially when those conversations are about WoW… Our ears perk up and we feel the overwhelming urge to ask the ultimate question: “Which server do you play on?”

Last week, Oath from Dressed to Cuddle suggested that, as our Shared Topic, we should talk about conversations about WoW we happen to overhear in the offline world:

Have you ever been out and about, minding your own business, having a casual conversation with a friend and fellow WoW player about the latest patch or last night’s dungeon, then some random stranger comes up to you and says something like, “Hey, I’m sorry, I couldn’t help but overhear, but do you guys play WoW? I’ve got a level XX [race] [class] on [server]“?

I’ve probably had two handfuls of people come up to me in real life, either overhearing I play WoW from conversation, or seeing that I’m wearing my Warlock shirt or Horde sweater, and strike up a conversation with me about the game.

While places of congregation abound, such as a gaming convention, comic book shop, or GameStop, the topic persists more of an unprecedented setting. I ran into an Alliance member at a mall outside of the restrooms and we had a heated debate about Varian Wrynn. A guy started a conversation with my cousin and me at a sushi bar because my cousin and I were discussing ICC. A friend and I were at dinner at an expensive restaurant, and I was telling her about my spec, as she was leveling a warlock, and our waiter chimed in about his warlock.

Have any of you out there in the blogosphere had this happen? If so, what was your experience like? Was it just a pleasant conversation or did you face off with a passionate member of the opposing faction?

Sharing their experiences were:

Next week, we tackle another topic that involves talking about WoW, but in a very different setting. Instead of WoW in the real world, we discuss whether or not we’d link to our blog in on our character’s WoW armory page.

Guild drama and angry PuG stories getting you down? Take your mind off the bad stuff with last week’s sunny Shared Topic: Positive Random Dungeon Stories. Suggested by Zan of Altoholic Anonymous, this topic is all about the good experiences we’ve had with those random strangers from other servers we’ve encountered on our dungeoning adventures.

We’ve had the new Dungeon Finder for about two months now and there are plenty of horror stories floating around. There’s tanks and healers feeling abused, not queuing, people feeling generally disenchanted about the whole thing and a whole lot of mean nasties flying around in the dungeon system.

Where’s the love? I know there have to be good positive warm and fuzzy experiences going on in the random dungeons as well. Have you helped or been helped by a total stranger in the random dungeon systems? How did you help? Let’s share some stories of those positive, feel good, experiences. Don’t have any stories? Go get some.

(Note that the suggestion was made back in January, hence the “we’ve had LFD for two months”.)

Sharing their happy tales are:

Zan from Althololic Anonymous (And the Shared Topic suggestion was inspired by this post of his.)

Lissanna from Restokin

Gypsy Red from Mischief, Magic and Rocket Science

Poneria from Fel Concentration

Saithir from Angry Dwarf

Jaedia from The Lazy Sniper

Gothmogs from Emerald Dreamers

Apparently, contrary to popular belief, good PuG stories aren’t a rarity at all!

This week’s Shared Topic is another social one, but instead of WoW and random in-game strangers, we’re invited to talk about WoW and random out-of-game strangers. Rilandune from Heroically Random! had suggested we talk about our personal plans for Cataclysm and Pheadra from DI the Tank had proposed discussing the changes to the game we’d like to see.

It’s a new expansion, it’s a new game in many respects. How will it change YOUR game? Will you play a new class you’ve been dying to play for years? Will you play a new role you’ve never played like tanking or healing? Have you been a hardcore raider and would like to get more into the lore and questing or vice versa?

Everyone’s talking about how talent trees and gear mechanics for Cata. will work, class balancing, etc. However, how else would you like Cataclysm to change the game for things like your character? They’re doing a huge overhaul of many of the original areas so it makes sense that they’ll be going back and changing other things. What do you hope gets changed, and what do you hope stays the same?

Taking part last week were:

Next week’s Shared Topic is about PUG stories…but no QQ this time! I know I am! This week’s Shared Topic encouraged our imaginations to run wild as we design our own, personalized boss fights. Sephrenia from Guild Mum is the one to thank for this very creative topic:

I was lying in bed the other day, thinking…. and I wondered what sort of boss I would be if I was a boss in WOW. Would I be an easy loot giving boss like Loot Reaver, Chess Event, Gunship, or would I be a really hard one, like STUPID ROTFACE who is driving us crazy at the moment, or Shade of Aran was in Karazhan for our guild many moons ago? What would my special abilities be? What loot would I drop?

Azryu from the Arcanery was the one who came up with the idea:

If you gave your character a voice, how would a conversation between you and them go?

How would you interact with them? Would you play god? How would your character sound? Would they be intelligent, witty, or be the embodiment of the stereotypical “huntard”?

Responses took on all sorts of different forms! Some bloggers wrote stories to accompany their encounter with their character, some interviewed their characters in a more formal setting, others shared the ups and downs of their day to day relationship with their alter ego.

I know a couple of people mentioned they wanted to take part in the topic but were concerned about how “weird” they would sound… Trust me, the internet is a big place.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Dristanel came up with a fantastic Secret Admirer idea! It sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to get to know some fellow bloggers!

Similar to Christmas’ Kris Kringle, interested bloggers can get in touch with her to be secretly paired with another blogger. Each participant then puts up a post on their own blog regarding the event and linking to the other bloggers. The purpose of this is two-fold: exposure for the community, and something the secret admirer can respond to. Said admirer then does so under an anonymous handle, adding poetry, flattery or other warm fuzzies, giving one subtle hint about their identity in each, for a total of three comments.

The first person to get back to Dristanel with a correct guess as to the identity of their admirer will win a small prize! At the end of the event, folks can make a new post with a final ‘open declaration of blog love’ for their assigned person, and of course links to the other posts if they so desire.

Sign ups run until Thursday (February 10th) and the event will take place over the weekend!

For more information and to sign up, you can get a hold of her at Blog Azeroth, at The Physician’s Log or via email at physicianslog at gmail dot com.

When you’re not playing WoW, what do you do? That was the theme of this week’s Shared Topic topic, suggested by Nim from Anhk = Life:

So after about a month of broken computer, it still can’t run WoW, which means I have to find other things to do to waste time. Which got me wondering how other people spend their WoW time when they can’t play WoW.

Eager to share their thoughts on time spent away from the game were:

Malfean from Raided M
Nim from Anhk = Life
Jen from Stories of WoW
Shawndra from Escapist Scrawl
Ophelie from The Bossy Pally and the Giant Spoon

The current week’s Shared Topic brings us right back into the game, and invites us to reveal a glimpse of our role playing side by posting a conversation with our character. Quite a few bloggers have stepped up to the challenge already and it’s bound to be an interesting week for Shared Topic posts!

Check out the Shared Topics forum at Blog Azeroth to join in on this or other Shared Topics!

Since this topic could potentially exclude a lot of bloggers, Shared Topic participants were encouraged to adapt it however they felt comfortable.

After reflecting on our gameplay this week, next week’s Shared Topic will bring us outside the game. When we can’t (or don’t want to) play WoW, what do we do with our free time? Come and prove that WoW players do have rich lives outside of WoW by checking out the thread at Blog Azeroth and taking part in the Shared Topic! If you would prefer to join in on any other topic (or you just want to do them all), feel free to browse the Shared Topic forum whenever!

This week’s Shared Topic invited us to gaze into our crystal balls and share our thoughts on what will happen to Azeroth and its people after Arthas is defeated.

This great idea was suggested by Ringo Flinthammer of Flinthammer Hall:

What now? What happens to the world of Azeroth? What happens to the people, the factions. How does this affect the relationships between the Alliance and Horde? What does your character think happens next? Is this the end for you, as a player, especially if you started, as I did, with Warcraft III? Is this the "end of history?"

Getting their fortune teller skills on are:

Zan from Altoholic Anonymous

Littlebark from The Tree Unleashed

Jaedia from The Lazy Sniper

Ophelie from The Bossy Pally and the Giant Spoon

While I expect my post-Arthas speculations to fail miserably, I can predict with some certainty that next week’s Shared Topic will stray away from lore and focus more on gameplay tricks as we share tips (or, in some cases, silly stories) on staying alive as a melee dps. If you’d like to take part in the upcoming shared topic or any other shared topic, stop by the forum on Blog Azeroth!

I also predict that Saresa will be back in town by the time the next topic ends. While I look forward to seeing her around the Nether again, I have to say I’m sad to hand these writeups back to her. It’s been a blast!

Cheers!

Ophelie, filling in for Saresa one last time.
